On 11 April, Livraria Lello presented PORTO, the first book published under its Livraria Lello Curates imprint. This edition brings together literature, photography and illustration to tell the story of the city through three distinct moments: work, leisure and celebration.
The project stems from a clear idea, in the words of Aurora Pedro Pinto, Director of Livraria Lello:
“Today, we celebrate another kind of love: love for a place, beginning with Porto. This is no coincidence, nor is it arbitrary; it is born of deep conviction. There is a philosophy in this city — raw, beautiful and unshakeable — that inspires us every day.”
The launch event featured the conversation “Porto, a Poem in Granite”, moderated by Jorge Sobrado, and brought together four guests who share Porto as a creative territory: Pedro Abrunhosa, Ana Neiva, Germano Silva and Rui Paula.
Among the many contributions, Germano Silva recalled the city’s indomitable spirit: “Porto was a city of character, a city that made the Terreiro do Paço tremble,” while Pedro Abrunhosa highlighted the relationship between freedom and culture: “Porto has always been a city of authors. There is no freedom without culture, and no culture without authors.”
During the event, a collaboration agreement between Livraria Lello and Porto City Council was also celebrated, signed by Aurora Pedro Pinto and Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto. The agreement strengthens the connection between the bookshop and the city, reaffirming a shared commitment to enhancing Porto’s cultural heritage and formally integrating Livraria Lello into the Porto Card network.
“People from Porto can reclaim what has, in fact, always belonged to them, because it is yours and it is ours,” said Rui Moreira.
This book is the first in a collection that aims to publish Portugal as it is felt. Available at the world’s most beautiful bookshop.
