On 27 March, from 9:00 p.m., Livraria Lello hosted the premiere of Em Nome Próprio (In One’s Own Name), a new series designed to bring readers closer to leading authors. The first guest was Teolinda Gersão, who joined Júlio Machado Vaz for a discussion and reflection on her most recent work. Admission was free, subject to prior registration.
More than a series of conversations, Em Nome Próprio is conceived as a meeting place for literature, identity and thought. Each session invites an author to reflect on the paths that have shaped their writing, revealing the invisible layers that exist beyond the pages.
Teolinda Gersão, one of the most acclaimed and award-winning writers in contemporary Portuguese literature, inaugurated the series with a focus on her book Autobiografia não escrita de Martha Freud (Martha Freud’s Unwritten Autobiography, Porto Editora, 2024), in a conversation with psychiatrist and university professor Júlio Machado Vaz.
The role of women in society, memory, fiction and the silences of history were among the themes explored in a session that promised to be memorable — a rare opportunity to meet the author in person and revisit her ideas in light of today’s challenges.
“A writer is more than the signature they leave on a work. There are invisible layers that shape them, concerns that are transformed into narrative. We are convinced that these conversations will bring new perspectives on literature and on life,” said Aurora Pedro Pinto, Director of Livraria Lello.
