Livraria Lello elected ‘The Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World’ by the worldwide community One Thousand Libraries
Livraria Lello, in Porto, was chosen as “The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World”, this time, by the global platform One Thousand Libraries (1000 Libraries), the largest online community of library and bookstores fans in the world.
The vote was announced this Wednesday, 30th, by the promoter of the initiative, with Livraria Lello receiving the title of 'The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World', followed by Shakespeare & Company (Paris, France) and Dujiangyan Zhongshug (Dujiangyan, China), in second and third place respectively.
There were fifteen finalist bookshoops in the international competition to choose the three most beautiful ones in the world. 200,000 internet users worldwide voted.
Voting in the competition were also the most beautiful libraries in the world, with the Royal Portuguese Reading Cabinet being elected to the podium of the three most beautiful in the world, which means that the Portuguese language was doubly awarded.
Over the years, Livraria Lello has stood out for its heritage, architectural and cultural value. Lello was first referred to as ‘The Most Beautiful Bookstore in the World’, by Spanish writer Enrique Vila-Matas, in an article published in the daily El País.
In 2008, the English newspaper The Guardian considered it one of the most beautiful in the world and three years later, in its Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2011 guide, the travel publisher referred to it as one of the best in the world, describing it as “a pearl of new art”.
In 2015, Time magazine named it among the most interesting bookstores in the world, highlighting its historical and artistic value, and CNN once again considers it the most beautiful in the world. A year later, it is National Geographic's turn to consider Livraria Lello one of the most beautiful on the planet. This list will now be joined, in 2023, by the 1000 Libraries platform.
Livraria Lello has also been a Monument of Public Interest in Portugal since 2013 and is awaiting reclassification as a National Monument by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC).
“It is with great joy that we receive this title, which once again highlights us as 'The Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World' and because we were the only Portuguese bookstore to participate in the poll. Livraria Lello continues to proudly assume the fact of being an ambassador of Porto and North, and of Portugal. It is this path, guided by difference, creativity, and innovation that we want to continue to trace for Livraria Lello and for the territory, contributing to the positioning of the region as a destination of choice and encouraging other partners in the North and Porto”, highlights the Administrator of Lello Bookstore, Aurora Pedro Pinto.
