May 5 was established, by the community of the countries with the Portuguese language, as the Day of the Countries who speak Portuguese.  Livraria Lello suggests two novels by two authors whose mother language is Portuguese.
Their birth in August is not the only thing the authors Jorge Amado and Gonçalo M. Tavares have in common. Both have written works that inspired adaptations to the theater, among others, which result in several awards for their success.

Gabriela, Cravo e Canela, Jorge Amado

Gabriela, Cravo e Canela is a 1958 novel written by Jorge Amado. The 464-page book narrates the touching love story between Gabriela and Nacib while also speaking about the unexpected transformations and evolutions of a small town in Bahia as the result of urban development and economic progress from the sale of cocoa.
This story became so popular that it was transformed into the first Brazilian soap opera to be broadcast on the Portuguese national television network. With several adaptations and awards, from television to comics, it became Jorge Andrade's best-selling book worldwide.

Jerusalém, de Gonçalo M. Tavares

Jerusalém is the third novel in the series O Reino and was written by one of today's most innovative European authors, Gonçalo M. Tavares.
The chronicle is composed of several characters of different ages and thoughts. The result is a text that can be interpreted by the reader in multiple ways. This story is a strong social analysis, full of intense feelings that also deals with the theme of the physical and psychological degradation of the human being.
