Serralves Museum

Serralves is both a museum and a work of art. Designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, the museum building opened in 1999 and is harmoniously integrated into both its urban surroundings and the natural context of Serralves Park (with 18 hectares of gardens and woods).


While here, it’s most certainly worth knowing that, among the many facilities in the beautiful Serralves complex, there is a library. The Serralves Library specialises in art, in its different manifestations - visual arts, performing arts, architecture, music - and approaches - art theory and history, cultural policies, collecting, cultural education -, with particular emphasis on the themes and artists featured in the Museum.


As for the exhibitions on display, this is an international, benchmark reference venue as far as contemporary art is concerned. The museum's permanent collection is made up of works by outstanding artists produced from the late 1960s through to contemporary times.
