Saint John arrived at the Most Beautiful Bookshop in the World
From the 22nd of June, Livraria Lello will be decorated to celebrate, together with our visitors, the biggest festival in the city of Porto: Saint John.
This Catholic festival, which aims to celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist, had pagan origins, at a time when people celebrated the beginning of the summer solstice, fertility, associated with the joy of harvests and abundance.
An event full of traditions, including leeks, hammers, launching hot air balloons, jumping over bonfires throughout the city, basil with popular quatrains, sardines and the traditional fireworks display at midnight. Throughout the city of Porto there are numerous popular festivals.
During the week of the celebration, the books will be accompanied by fragrant manjericos, some curiosities about the commemorative day and, of course, quatrains by Portuguese authors.
