Valter Hugo Mãe | Em Nome Próprio
Who is Valter Hugo Mãe, beyond the pages?
In a special session — marking the world premiere on Netflix of the film adaptation of O filho de mil homens (Porto Editora) — the author will be at the bookshop talking to the public about the genesis of his work, his fictional universe and his relationship with art and cinema.
Valter Hugo Mãe gained widespread recognition in 2007 when he received the José Saramago Prize for his novel O remorso de Baltazar Serapião, which was followed by other notable titles such as A máquina de fazer espanhóis, O filho de mil homens, and the recent publication of Educação da tristeza; Deus na escuridão, among others. The author maintains a strong public presence, establishing himself as one of the most unique voices in contemporary Portuguese-language literature.
In 2025, he reached a new milestone in popularity: the premiere, on 19 November, on Netflix, of the film adaptation of O Filho de Mil Homens, directed by Daniel Rezende and starring Rodrigo Santoro, presented as a fable about loneliness, love and acceptance. The session of the Em nome próprio (In One's Own Name) series at Livraria Lello will thus be a privileged moment to celebrate this journey, bring the author closer to his readers and highlight the international projection of Portuguese literature.
22 November, at 9 p.m., at Livraria Lello.
