An antique and rare Portuguese, leather bound, first edition of the epic poem by the Italian Torquato Tasso. The colophon is profusely ornamented by a full-page engraving with a sonnet at the centre. Based on historical fact, Jerusalem Liberated draws inspiration from the equally beloved Orlando Furioso, by Ludovico Ariosto, and the epics of Virgil and Homer. Written in the eight-line stanzas common in Italian Renaissance poetry, Tasso's masterpiece is renowned for the beauty of its language, deep expressions of emotion and concern for historical accuracy. A much-appreciated work that has since inspired artists all around the world.
